We're looking for women from all industries, trades and services to volunteer just one hour per year of your time to speak with girls in a high school near you. You don't need to be a professional speaker, it's as simple as telling the girls what you do and how you got there, in your own words.
Whether you’re a 19 year-old apprentice or a retired CEO; whether you're self-employed or work for a large corporation; whether you’re working full-time, part-time, or taking a career break – girls in Nova Scotia high schools want and need to hear about your job, career path and life experiences.
Nervous about public speaking? Don’t be - you won't be alone. There will be a number of women volunteers speaking (usually between 5 and 12), you only need to speak for 5-10 minutes, and a teacher will always be present.
How does it work?
First of all, we only need one hour of your time, once a year. More often if you wish, but no less.
When you join Inspiring Women NS, you will complete a personal profile, including information on how far you’re willing to travel to a school. For example, you may prefer to talk to schools near your workplace rather than near your home - or both.
When a school registers with Inspiring Women NS, a staff member will have access to relevant but non-identifiable parts of your profile. If the school is interested, they will contact us with an invitation for you to speak at their school. We will then contact you to see if you're interested and provide you with some guidelines for success. Volunteers are not paid or reimbursed expenses and are responsible for their own travel. Ride sharing is encouraged.
How can I get involved?
It's easy! Start by completing your personal profile. Simply volunteering for one hour per year can make a real difference to the aspirations of young Nova Scotian women. It's all run through our safe, secure online database at www.InspiringWomenNS.ca
IWNS is also seeking volunteers to help with organizing its volunteers and schools. Most tasks can be done via email or Google Docs in your own time - no committee meetings unless they're absolutely necessary. Contact us if you're willing to help at the committee level.
